The public disclosure of the NYPD activities spying on citizens of muslim faith stirred an outcry as it should do. But, to be frank, it hardly could be otherwise given the role of the US in the world; as they say: “A nation who oppresses others can’t be itself free”.
In fact, this is a practice that even in countries less involved in international warfare isn’t uncommon. This caricature was intended to illustrate an article on the alleged cases of internal espionage in Argentina. A notorious one (currently under judicial scrutiny) involved the conservative mayor of Buenos Aires autonomous district and some of the victims of the 1994 bombing of the Jewish communal center (AMIA) who opposed his appointment of a General Commissioner suspected of covering the evidence in that case.

Bob–I just want to say that I really enjoy reading tidbits about Argentinian politics through your blog. I don’t pretend to know much about it, but do read whatever interesting articles I come across in our papers here, b/c it feels like yeah, I kinda know something…I was there.

Thanks, Lauren. I’m glad you came to visit out of nostalgia of Argentina. In fact, I try to keep these blog more internationally oriented and keep the Argentinean local issues for my blog in Spanish (http://gloriamundo.blogspot.com). I acknowledge, however, that my long, twisted rants on local politics may be a bit heavy for a nostalgic visit ;).
