Castro_FrancisMay be when old Fidel will meet Francis he’ll remember of those Jesuit priests of his student days. Or, maybe, he’ll recall other Argentinians who played key roles in his life. Ernesto “Che” Guevara, of course; but also Jorge Masetti and Rodolfo Walsh. Masetti was the first journalist reporting the guerrilla warfare from the Sierra Maestra and then set up Prensa Latina, collecting contributors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jean-Paul Sartre or Charles Wright Mills. Walsh, who was a skilled writer of police short stories, was able to decrypt the messages intercepted in preparation for the Bay of Pigs invasion.
Perhaps will think Fidel of those strange Argentinians who helped him to survive the attempts to finish him to become a living legend at the price of losing their own life. And now, at the end of the journey it has to be this unusual priest who helped him to achieve the United States recognition of the Cuban reality. Let’s hope this time his help will not be paid with his life.
